WIND ABOUT THE TOWERS

(Trek in the Torres del Paine National Park - Chilean Patagonia - January 2001)

Before going to the Torres del Paine, we flew to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires. We camped there, at the foot of the ski runs (very nice, the Club Andino campground ! with showers, toilets, and possibility to have dinner, at reasonable price). By the way : yes, that's me, on the picture !

On the next day, we first walked around the city of Ushuaia (very nice bread shop 10 minutes from the campgroud). One shopping street, but not much else (we did not go see the museum, which is said to be good). Anyway, we found a gaz canister Camping Gaz Bleuet 206, in the sports shop Victor, San Martin street. Reasonable Price.

In the afternoon, as the weather was good, we went for a boat ride on the Beagle Canal. There was a choice : either a 3 hour trip, for $ 25, or 5 hours, for $ 45. But, for that price, you also see the penguins. We choose the "cheap" alternative. It is still expensive, but worth it, if the weather is good. In the distance, you see the superb mountains of Cordillera Darwin, whose access is quite difficult (no trails, and very bad weather...).

The boat stops close to an island inhabited by a colony of seals, then close to another island, where thousands of cormorants have made their nests.

We were fortunate not to have taken the "luxury" tour : the weather got bad as we were coming back.
